Hi, I'm Danny.

I'm 23, I live in Germany and I write software for a living. Most days that means Android and Kotlin at SPEDION, where we build the app truck drivers use all day long: orders, routes, driving times, messages, navigation. If you see a tablet on a truck dashboard telling the driver where to go next, there's a fair chance it's ours.

I got into this through a three-year apprenticeship that started in 2020. In Germany that's called Fachinformatiker für Anwendungsentwicklung, which is a long way of saying "application developer". I stayed after I finished, and since late 2024 I also train the apprentices who started after me. Some of them are barely younger than I am, which is a weird feeling.

After work I build small tools for problems I keep running into. A terminal app for poking at Android devices, a way to set my Slack status without opening Slack, a CSS file that makes websites look like an old tube monitor. Some of it is useful. Some of it is just fun.

I care a lot about privacy. In 2019 I started Slynite with friends because we wanted software that doesn't collect more data than it needs. That's still the idea behind most things I make, including this site: no trackers, no analytics, no cookie banner.

When I'm not at a keyboard I'm probably out hiking, taking photos, or watching cars go fast.

Training apprentices, I kept seeing the same thing: people watch a tutorial, nod along, and a day later can't write the code themselves. dot. is my answer to that.

There are no videos. A lesson works more like a conversation: first you predict what a piece of code will print, then you write code yourself, then a short comprehension check. You only move on when it actually sticks.

The first track is Kotlin: 12 courses and 111 lessons, from your first println to generics, coroutines, testing, Gradle and what the JVM and the compiler do under the hood. The courses build on each other, and at the end of the track there's a certificate with your name on it.

There's also an AI helper, called dot as well. You can ask it about the lesson, it gives feedback on your predictions and hands out hints. But it sticks to the course material, links its sources, and it won't give you the solution. Before you get a hint, you have to write down what you've tried and where exactly you're stuck. Surprisingly often, that alone solves it.

It's free, you don't need an account, and your progress stays on your device. Available in English and German.

At work I plug a lot of Android devices into my laptop. Tablets that live in truck cabs, test phones, emulators. And every time I needed something slightly unusual, I ended up googling the same adb commands again.

So I wrote a toolbox. It's a TUI built with Bubble Tea: actions on the left, output on the right. It downloads its own copies of adb and scrcpy, so it works on a fresh Windows laptop without anyone installing the Android SDK first. Honestly, that part was more work than the UI.

What I like about it:

Actions live in a plain actions.yaml. A new action is a few lines, no Go needed.
You can describe an action in plain English and it writes the YAML for you through the Claude Code CLI. I was skeptical. It's actually handy.
Emulator controls for faking GPS positions and battery levels, which you need a lot when you work on navigation.
It reads APK metadata without any external tools.
English and German UI.

It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, arm64 included. Getting unsigned binaries past Gatekeeper and SmartScreen deserves its own blog post.

The main product at SPEDION and where I spend most of my time. It runs on tablets and phones in truck cabs and covers pretty much a driver's whole day: orders and routes, driving and rest times, messages with dispatch, documents, navigation.

I'm very active in this project: new features, bug fixes, UI work, whatever comes up. One thing I'm really happy I got to do: dark mode. Doesn't sound like much until you picture a driver looking at a bright white screen at 3 a.m. on the Autobahn.

Working on software that runs inside moving trucks changes how you think about releases. You can't just hotfix a truck that's parked somewhere with one bar of signal.

Navigation for trucks is its own thing. Height and weight limits, roads you're not allowed to take, and drivers who really don't want surprises.

I'm one of the people who are in this codebase pretty much every week. I build new features, fix bugs and helped build core parts of the app.

The part I'm proudest of is the notification engine: it decides which hints a driver gets along the route, when to show them, and how to show them without getting in the way of someone driving 40 tonnes.

Drivers deal with a lot of paper: delivery notes, freight documents, receipts. DocScan turns their phone into a scanner so the paperwork reaches the office before the truck does.

I started the development and built the first core features and UI flows in Jetpack Compose. Around the halfway point more coworkers joined and we finished it as a team.

It was my first bigger Compose project, so I learned a lot of it on the way. I'm not a Compose wizard, but I get things done with it.

Migrating auth is one of those jobs where the best possible outcome is that nobody notices anything. We moved our apps to a new identity provider, and I worked on the changes on Android, iOS and the backend.

The hard part wasn't the new login, it was the switch-over. Apps out on the road update whenever they update, so the move had to happen without anyone suddenly getting logged out in the middle of a shift.

Together with a few colleagues I helped set up our Kubernetes environment, containerized .NET services that had never seen a Dockerfile before and worked on automating deployments. The migration is ongoing, as migrations always are.

Monitoring tools are great at knowing that something is wrong and not so great at telling you nicely.

I built an internal dashboard with a Next.js frontend and a C# API behind it. It collects the alerts, sorts them and shows the ones that actually need attention, in a way that doesn't make you want to close the tab.

Opening Slack just to set my status to \"lunch\" usually ended with me reading three threads and forgetting about lunch. This fixes that.

It's a small Go TUI. Set a custom status with text and emoji, save templates like \"In a meeting\" or \"Focus time\", and apply them with a couple of keystrokes. There's a plain CLI version too, if you want to call it from scripts.

Small project, but a good excuse to get properly into Go and the Charm libraries.

A bit of CSS that adds scanlines, some flicker and that slight color fringing you got on old CRT screens. Drop it on a page and it looks 30 years older.

I made it in 2021 after falling into a CodePen rabbit hole (credit to Patrick H. Lauke, whose pen got me started). It's still my most-starred repo on GitHub with 65 stars, which tells you what people actually want from me. Not my Android code. Scanlines.

Most email apps are either nice to use and hungry for your data, or private and stuck in 2004. I'd like one that's both.

Slynite Mail talks JMAP instead of IMAP and is written with Kotlin Multiplatform and Compose Multiplatform, so the same code runs on Android, iOS, desktop and the web. The JMAP part comes from a Rust library with Kotlin bindings, which is a great way to find out how little you know about native interop.

It's early. The architecture is in place (Decompose, MVI, SQLDelight for the local cache) and the MVP list is long. If you know JMAP and want to help, send me a message.

A travel guide that doesn't track your location. A bit ironic for a travel app, and exactly the point.

We built an Android app, a web app with a map of all the places, a small public API for the location data and the backend around it. I worked on pretty much every part of it with a friend from the Slynite team.

It started as a prototype in June 2021 and taught me more about shipping software than any tutorial: auth, data modelling, and how long it takes to agree on a single map marker. The project is on ice now, but the code is all on GitHub.

A vocational school project that got a bit out of hand. Jonas Bott and I built a browser-based time tracker: create projects, log hours, see where your week went. Next.js and Tailwind in the front, Appwrite for auth and data.

It never reached 1.0. But it was the first time I worked on a codebase with someone else using real pull requests and reviews, and I've been annoyingly strict about PR descriptions ever since.

You're using it right now. My previous site was a Windows 98 desktop, so this is either an upgrade or a downgrade, depending on who you ask.

Everything here is built from scratch: the window manager, the menus, the icons (drawn pixel by pixel), Paint, the puzzle. All the text lives in Markdown and YAML files, the contact form uses a small proof-of-work instead of a captcha, and there's no tracking at all.
